Greg starts his journal by saying that over the past few days his mom has been drilling into him about responsibility and giving him extra chores. She started this after he missed the bus to school a week ago. Today, she told Greg and Rodrick to help Gramma move some boxes in her attic because she is planning to move to Leisure Towers. Gramma wants to move because she is tired of her neighbours.
The image shows that her "neighbours" are typical teenagers not wearing helmets on a skateboard and calling her a "boomer" when she suggests it. Their mom took Greg and Rodrick to Gramma's house and they start moving boxes from the attic downstairs but within five minutes Rodrick has given up and is playing on his phone.
Greg finds it pretty fun to see all the weird things that Gramma has stored in her attic. He finds trophies, photos, degrees and an item he believed to be a watch. Rodrick asks what it is and when says he isn't sure Rodrick asks for it but Greg insists finders keepers but Rodrick moves to take it. Then something happens to the pair and Greg describes it as them being in a spiral tube thing before they appear outside with Greg needing to vomit.
When Greg says how weird that was, Rodrick tells him to take a look and they can see a second Greg walking and Greg realises that the watch did this. Greg bends down to pick it up and the other Greg sees Rodrick and believes that Rodrick was hiding and Rodrick jumps out of the bush and punches the other Greg telling Greg it "felt good". Rodrick asks Greg for a hand and Greg agrees saying they need to hide the Greg that Rodrick just punched out. They hear a voice which asks what they are doing, so Rodrick grabs Past Greg, Greg grabs the watch and they both run as fast as they can.
They stop running after they think they have got away and Greg trips, dropping the watch and knocking Rodrick down, who drops Past Greg. Rodrick and Greg tumble down the edge and when they get back up the watch and Past Greg are gone, which Greg understands instantly stating that him and Rodrick are screwed.
Monday[]
A few days after Greg and Rodrick were stuck in the past they have not managed to catch a break because the entire town is searching for this missing Greg. For a day, the pair walk around and have a run in with a rabid raccoon.
They contemplate going to their "mom" and "dad" but Rodrick argues that if they go "home" they will be monitored and they need to be independent. They are doing a decent job going unnoticed but when they are seen they have a solution, Greg pushes whoever sees them over Rodrick.
Their main problem is food, as they can't stop moving because the whole town is looking for Greg. Rodrick has no money so they start to work out where to get some money. They come up with Rodrick going to Manny and getting a loan from his money jar. That night they wait in the bushes and see Rodrick leave the house going to a concert. Rodrick uses the opportunity to enter the house and speak to Manny. Greg remains outside but looks in through Manny's window and Manny only offers three bucks.
Greg sees Past Rodrick come back into the drive and Past Rodrick is on the phone to Bill saying he forgot to get money for gas. Greg panics, thinking that the two Rodricks might meet and bangs on Manny's window but Rodrick is gone and Manny sees him. Manny goes to the window and Greg runs. He runs into the house and sees the basement door open, thinking he will have a chance to help Rodrick get out. Manny trips Greg, pulls a bag over his head and drags Greg to his room.
Manny ties Greg to a chair before removing the bag and Manny starts to interrogate Greg and Manny puts a sock puppet on his hand and starts to argue with himself and punch himself in the face as he argues with the puppet. Greg uses this as a chance to escape and, still tied to the chair, gets to the basement and trips, closing the door behind him. He rolls down the stairs and the chair breaks but Greg is unharmed. Greg goes up the stairs but the door is jammed, so he looks under the gap in the door. Greg sees his Rodrick and Past Rodrick who are both there.
Past Rodrick presumes that the drugs he has taken are messing with his head and he is hallucinating earlier than expected. Rodrick jumps on this idea and claims to be a hallucination and tells Past Rodrick to lie down. Rodrick lets Greg out and they start to leave the house until Greg asks why Rodrick has their "mom's" purse, and Rodrick explains it was the only thing with money he could grab and Greg grabs one of the jackets hanging on the door.
Greg and Rodrick head to Walmart and Greg hides in the bushes when Rodrick goes to buy food. Greg is almost seen a few times but Rodrick gets the food pretty fast so it works out fine. Rodrick hands Greg a sandwich before he can eat, he hears an alarm which was from their "mom" tracking her phone which was in the purse Rodrick grabbed. Greg is about to tell Rodrick they need to run but everyone starts looking at Greg.
They start to crowd him and Greg knows that soon they will realize that he is the missing kid, so Greg yells to run. Him and Rodrick run but the crowd block them and Greg starts to panic until he notices the door to Walmart is slightly open. Greg and Rodrick run through the door and Greg grabs a cart and the crowd chases them.
Greg starts knocking things on the floor to slow the chasers down and he dodges people as he moves. He turns and realises he is surrounded but he notices the exit and he rushes towards it but a security guard is in the way and Greg tries and fails to slow in time, hitting the guard. Greg says that the security guard's gut absorbed most of the blow and he flops on the ground as Greg hits the pavement. Rodrick catches up and helps Greg up and they run but come to a halt as they see their "dad" and Manny in their car.
Their "dad" tells them to get in the car and lectures them about how worried him and Susan have been and how irresponsible Greg and Rodrick are. When in the car, Greg realizes that because they went back in time, their still might be the time travelling watch in Gramma's attic. Greg goes to tell Rodrick to recline their "dad's" chair to give them time to rush into the bushes and escape. Rodrick is hesitant but they don't have a choice. Manny goes to reveal their plan which spurs Rodrick to action, reclining Frank's seat which makes him lose control over the car and they hit a small tree. Greg and Rodrick manage to escape.
They make it to Gramma's house and look through the gnomes to find the spare key. They get inside and try to stay quiet but fail, but Gramma doesn't notice the noise. They make it to the attic but the hatch closes behind them trapping them. They search for the watch making a lot of noise and after about 5 minutes they hear Gramma asking if someone is there. Rodrick and Greg stay in silence until they hear footsteps coming towards them. They rapidly look through boxes and as Greg runs to the front of the attic, his foot goes through the floor. Rodrick tries to help but Greg remains stuck, so Rodrick gives up and he starts looking for the watch. Gramma comes into the attic and is shocked, telling the two of them to come with her.
She takes them downstairs and tells them a story. When she was young, every Friday her dad would take her camping. One time, when collecting firewood, she finds the watch. She grows dependent on the watch and attacks her friend when she tries to take the watch.
This causes Gramma to realize that the watch is messing with her life and she stops using it and hides it. For the rest of her life, she wonders where the watch came from and what it means. She says that she considered getting the watch back but decided to leave it behind in the attic instead.
Greg wasn't very interested in this story but finds it useful to have an explanation for the watch. He hears people moving around outside and the doorbell rings and Gramma unlocks it and the cops ask her about the missing child, Greg, who was seen in the area. It is going well, until Greg knocks one of the lamps, breaking it. Greg then questions if he is a fictional character in a story because he always seems to make noise at the worst time.
The cops pull out a warrant and they start to head to the room Greg is hiding in and so he slams the door shut and locks it. He tells Rodrick to get the watch who rushes to bring it to Greg but slips and drops it, causing the watch to "go nuts" and as the cops shoot the lock and open the door a green light filled the house and a humming sound gets louder and louder.
Greg shouts that he thinks the watch is going to blow up before a burst of blue and green light absorbs him and Rodrick. They pass through various points in time falling uncontrollably, and they see cavemen, the Wright brothers flying their plane, ancient Egypt, the moon landing being filmed on a set and some monarchs. Greg vomits as they continue to move between times and they start spinning in a vortex with their bodies stretching and contorting. Greg sees a vision of lots of tall people who all look like him and they start to speak to him but it is muffled and suddenly Greg and Rodrick finish falling through time and slam into Gramma's attic.
Greg sees the shattered watch and complains that the watch was their only way to send Past Greg back to the correct time. Past Greg is awake and questions why Greg would send him back. Past Greg says he loves it here because there are no Rodrick's in sight which Greg calls harsh. Rodrick asks Greg how they are going to send Past Greg back now. Past Greg pulls out a baseball bat saying he is sorry to Greg. Rodrick grabs nunchucks - with Greg wondering why Gramma has all this in her attic - and tells Greg to square up which makes Greg realize that Past Greg is about to fight them.
Rodrick and Past Greg get into a staring contest with the tension rising and then there is a rumbling from the outside, making things even worse. There is a huge figure, standing as tall as the house and it rips the roof apart. Rodrick and Greg scream and it picks Greg up with Greg asking the figure to not eat him but the figure speaks to Greg. It says to listen carefully.
The figure explains that before the multiverse existed, there were "keepers of time" who kept order within the timelines. One day the keepers of time noticed a disturbance which is how they found Greg. When Greg asks the Keeper about the timeline it shows him a book with pictures of alternate realities. It allows Greg to look through a few pages before it takes the book back.
Greg asks what happens now and the Keeper says it will be setting things back to normal and fixing the timeline, asking for Greg's journal but granting him permission to write one last entry.
Greg says that he learned to see time as a blessing and curse and it should be spent wisely. He says you only get one shot so you should make it count.
The Keeper gets impatient so Greg signs off calling himself one of the world's first time travellers.
The Tower[]
The story continues following the Keeper who reset Greg's timeline. He returns to the Tower with the journal and watch and finds the other Keepers looking through a telescope. The other Keepers say the "He's back" while looking at a meteorite.
